Explain a technical uncertainty at a Singapore cofounder meetup
Turn the proposed task into an uncertainty brief, compare technical suggestions on the same assumptions and record what a prototype actually demonstrated before choosing a next investigation.

Start with these checks
- A builder or founder discussion accepts a bounded technical question
- Relevant experience for the input and operating dependency
- An actual opportunity for participant questions and permitted examples
The problem
A nontechnical Singapore founder describes an idea as a simple app but cannot explain which integration or operating uncertainty a prospective technical partner would need to resolve.
Describe the completed task without prescribing its technology
Write who needs to do what, the input they would use and the result that makes this task complete. State what exists now: a drawing, an invented demonstration, a running piece of software or no implementation. Do not use those descriptions interchangeably. A preferred stack can be discussed later; begin with the job it would have to support. Add the constraint that matters to your question, such as an input controlled elsewhere or an answer needed before the next role can work. If you cannot yet explain completion, name that uncertainty. A nontechnical founder can provide a clear task account without claiming to know how it should be built. Investigate whether customers need the task separately from how a technical approach might implement it.
Mark the input and dependency at the status actually known
Use four entries for each necessary input: what information is needed; where you think it comes from; access or behaviour established; and question still unanswered. Separate an available sample from a current external connection. Data.gov.sg’s overview distinguishes real-time APIs from collection and dataset APIs and explains collections and metadata. That limited public-data context illustrates why the interface needs clarification; it supplies no result for your proposed tool. For an invented practice project, an API overview may help name a question about the dataset and field you need. It does not establish that the selected data covers your task, arrives when needed or has been read by your prototype. Keep credentials and private records out of a public brief.

Give both proposed approaches the same starting brief
Write a comparison row for each suggestion: proposed approach; required input and assumption; important trade-off; first check; observation that would challenge it; and dependency it leaves open. Invite the person to explain a term in relation to the task instead of pretending every technical word is clear. A focused question is, “Which assumption does this approach depend on, and what would you examine before choosing it?” State your own available contribution to that investigation. If one person assumes a current external connection and another assumes a stored sample, they are answering different scopes. Clarify that difference before comparing an estimated delivery date or choosing the most assured speaker. Use the comparison to expose the assumptions still needing technical investigation.
Compare two fictional suggestions without choosing a person by confidence
The project and suggestions are entirely invented. The task needs a particular field in a changing external input. Suggestion A names a framework and says the screen can be built quickly, but leaves field availability and updating unanswered. Suggestion B proposes examining an authorised sample and its stated source first, identifying the required field, then separately establishing how a permitted current input would arrive. B gives a more explicit investigation for that dependency; it has not established that the field exists or that updating works. A may have a relevant explanation not yet requested. Ask the same missing-input question of both, retain their actual answers and leave unperformed checks unperformed. No invented suggestion is a quotation, delivery promise or rating of a real attendee.
Record the visible prototype before extending its conclusion
Ask the demonstrator what starting data is supplied, which action runs, what result is visible and which steps are simulated, preloaded or not implemented. Keep the explanation they give alongside your actual observation. A successful display can be useful for the supplied task while an outside update, permission, failure response or receiving action remains unshown. A button’s wording does not establish what a connected service did. Check what a final action actually saved or sent and which environment restrictions apply. Record the specific implementation uncertainty your potential collaborator needs to explain. Do not ask for live customer records, payments or system access merely to make the public demonstration more convincing.
Work through a fictional supplied-data demonstration
This demonstration describes no actual app, dataset or API call. Three invented records are loaded before the screen opens; two match a selected category and the third does not. Activating the filter displays the two matching supplied records. That observation supports selection within this invented three-record input. The screen also displays a manually entered “latest” label, while no retrieval or update is exercised. The display therefore does not establish a current source connection, freshness or complete coverage. Nor does it establish that those capabilities fail: they remain unexamined. Ask what permitted observation would establish the missing input path and what its conditions would be. Keep the supplied-data result intact instead of discarding it or enlarging it into an end-to-end claim.
Turn the remaining uncertainty into a scoped investigation
Choose one gap that affects the next decision. Write the question, permitted material or environment, person who can supply it, observation sought and decision the answer would inform. Mark the activity proposed until each required participation and permission is established. In the fictional demonstration, the gap could be whether an appropriate input exposes the required field; a successful field inspection would still leave updating separate. A public conversation can improve this plan without performing it or producing a fixed build estimate. SME Centre @SMCCI’s provider description checked on 8 October 2026 gives advisory and diagnostic context that helps distinguish a business enquiry from a capability workshop, but promises no technical evaluation of your example. Confirm the actual format accepts your stage and question, then use Boardzip’s free builder search for candidates.

Leave with the comparison and its unfinished work explicit
Retain the common task, each approach’s assumption, observed result, unexamined dependency and optional next investigation. Ask the person to correct your understanding when a technical distinction remains unclear; a clear explanation is more useful than copying a technology list. Confirm availability, shared contribution and a mutually scoped first collaboration separately. Map later recurring responsibilities before assuming the proposed build has continuing support. If a later result becomes available, record what was checked, its input and conditions, and what stayed unanswered. Keep an informal direction, an investigation plan and actual evidence distinct. A better brief can be useful progress even when no partner, implementation or delivery estimate is confirmed.
Questions and answers
Must I learn a stack before asking a technical founder a question?
Explain the task, completion, available input and unknown dependency honestly. Ask how a proposed approach relates to them and what its first check would establish. Check event prerequisites separately; clear preparation does not claim implementation expertise or guarantee admission.
How do I compare two confident but different suggestions?
Give both the same task and ask for their input assumptions, trade-off, first check and open dependency. If they assume different access or completion, resolve that scope difference before comparing estimates. Confidence or framework familiarity alone supplies none of those observations.
Does a working screen prove the outside input is connected?
Record what was supplied and exercised. In the invented case, two selected rows came from three preloaded records while updating was unshown. That supports the supplied filtering result, not freshness or a current connection; absent evidence establishes neither success nor failure of the missing part.
Can the word latest on the screen establish freshness?
Identify how the value and input were obtained. A manually entered label supplies no update observation. Ask what check covers the relevant source and conditions rather than borrowing the label’s apparent meaning as evidence.
Can I ask for a build estimate after showing the brief?
Someone may describe a direction or questions, but record its assumptions and unexamined dependencies. Any later delivery proposal needs its appropriate scope and terms. This public discussion aid supplies no price, deadline, estimate accuracy or implementation commitment.
What should the follow-up investigate first?
Choose the dependency that matters to the next decision, then define the permitted input, responsible contribution and observation required. Keep a proposed check distinct from a completed result. Agree availability and collaboration terms directly, and identify recurring operating responsibilities separately.
