Compare promotion evidence at a Singapore retail peer session
Define the visit and purchase observations behind a promotion claim, compare like units and retain the conditions that stop a descriptive result becoming a causal promise.

Start with these checks
- Retail examples state what was counted and how
- The same population, unit and period can be examined
- A fictional comparison can be discussed without private records
The problem
A Singapore retail owner hears that a promotion increased sales but cannot compare the claim with their own shop because visitor counts, operating periods and the measured result differ.
Copy the reported result before interpreting it
Write the actual statement and separate the quantity from the explanation someone gives it. Sales might refer to revenue, transactions or units sold; more visitors describes another measure. Ask which quantity the record contains, its unit, location and period. Keep the original wording when it remains ambiguous instead of choosing the meaning that makes the promotion look effective. A claim of increased sales can be a useful question for a peer session while its comparison is still incomplete. Put reported observation and proposed explanation in two lines. Do not convert a visitor total into sales, a transaction total into unique customers or a price-free count into profit. Each additional conclusion needs a relationship or record the headline may not supply.
Establish what one count represents
Ask whether a visitor figure counts entries, individual people, a defined visit or another recorded event. Ask the same question of website sessions and purchase records before combining them. A person could generate more than one entry or transaction; keep that possibility unresolved unless the actual recording definition addresses it. Do not assume a chart identifies repeat customers or ties a purchase to a particular visit. DesignSingapore’s customer-research article discusses observing and interviewing customers, defining a research question and testing prototype solutions. That is method context, not a rule for visitor counting or approval of a tracking system. Clarify what was collected and what the chosen measure can establish. Its definition supplies neither a person’s identity nor permission for a new collection practice.

Make a count-definition card with the missing fields visible
Use seven fields: question; observation unit; population included; place or channel; period and operating hours; recording method actually used; and exclusions or missing records. Add a linked purchase measure only when its definition and relationship to that population are established. If a rate is supplied, record its numerator and denominator with their units and the division. A shop-entry count and all online transactions may cover different activity; putting them in one percentage does not explain the relationship. Leave an absent input blank rather than estimating it from an attractive chart. Use this card to check which definitions and relationships the reported rate still needs. For a report total changed by filters, use the data-population guide; for repeated rows after a match, use the join guide. Preserve those specific investigations separately.
Keep a fictional count and fraction together
This entire example is invented. In each of two fictional periods, every counted visit is recorded once, and the record states whether that visit contains a purchase. Period A has 100 counted visits, including 20 with a purchase: 20 divided by 100 is 20%. Period B has 150 visits, including 25 with a purchase: 25 divided by 150 is about 16.7%, rounded to one decimal place. B has five more purchase visits and a smaller fraction of visits containing a purchase. These observations can coexist. The example contains no transaction amounts, costs, unique-person count or evidence of what caused the difference. It does not establish revenue, profit or that the promotion succeeded or failed. The numerator counts purchase visits here; replacing it with transactions would be a different definition that needs its own explanation.
Compare the period and the shop conditions alongside the numbers
Keep confirmed same, confirmed different and unknown conditions in separate columns. Relevant questions can include opening hours, product availability, the offer shown, nearby activity, stock range and staff interaction. Record the actual basis rather than assuming equivalent days or inventing a standard adjustment. A larger visitor count during longer opening hours describes a different opportunity to visit; it does not isolate the promotion’s effect. A stock gap can leave a customer interested without establishing a completed purchase. Ask which difference matters to the intended comparison and what record could clarify it. Do not erase a differing condition merely because both rows are called monthly results. Two periods and a precise percentage still do not supply a controlled causal evaluation.
Choose one permitted observation question for your shop
Define the question before making a change or gathering additional records. For an invented shop, staff want to understand whether visitors ask about an offer that the counter cannot explain. A small permitted observation can record whether that question occurred and what information was available; it does not automatically explain sales or justify collecting identities. Agree the actual record, period, access, handling and responsible review through your business’s appropriate process. This guide sets no customer-tracking or consent policy. Keep the observation you can make separate from an effect you hope to see. If a change is authorised, retain what else differed and what remained unobserved. A limited clearer record can identify a follow-up question without establishing that the change caused more purchases.
Choose a session that can inspect the definitions
Ask whether the advertised activity examines an operating example and its measures, rather than only displaying a successful campaign chart. SME Centre @SMCCI’s provider description checked on 8 October 2026 distinguishes advisory, guided diagnostics, group upgrading projects and capability-building workshops. That context helps choose a learning route without confirming an individual review or current place. Bring a small fictional definition card and the fixed comparison above if the format accepts them. A focused enquiry is: “Can this working segment examine which visits and purchases a result counts, and which period conditions remain unknown?” Use a data exercise when the missing task is inspecting input rows, and a retail discussion when the missing question is the shop interaction. A category or speaker list alone does not establish either activity.

Retain a descriptive conclusion and an open next question
Finish with the quantities actually compared, definitions established, differing conditions and conclusion those observations support. For the fictional rows, state more purchase visits alongside a lower purchase-visit fraction. Retain revenue, cost and causal questions as unknown. If a presenter suggests a follow-up, record it as proposed until the appropriate evidence is obtained. Keep the earlier card and any revised definition so another reader can see what changed. Use Boardzip’s free retail search for a suitable peer or measurement discussion, then verify its actual participant task and sharing conditions. Search access is free; it does not supply private case review, a trial or verified marketing results. If the needed population or period is unavailable, keep that gap rather than manufacturing a conversion percentage.
Questions and answers
Can purchase visits rise while their percentage falls?
Yes in the defined fictional example: 20 of 100 is 20%, while 25 of 150 is about 16.7%. Keep both counts and their units. The example gives no revenue, unique-customer result or cause.
Can I divide transactions by any visitor number?
First establish what both records count, their period and the relationship between them. Multiple transactions during one visit or unmatched channels need explanation. A ratio using those inputs is not automatically the fraction of visits containing a purchase.
What if I do not record visitors?
State the missing denominator and compare the observations you actually have. Define an appropriate authorised observation question if useful; do not invent visitor counts or describe a transaction-only record as a conversion result.
Does an analytics chart identify repeat customers?
Read the actual observation definition and evidence. Repeated entries, visits and known people are different concepts. A chart label cannot supply an identity relationship or approve additional collection; keep that question with the responsible process.
Can I attribute a change to the promotion when stock or opening hours differed?
Retain those differences and ask what comparison would clarify the claim. A descriptive pair can be useful while its cause remains unknown. Do not remove conditions or invent an adjustment to make the result fit a headline.
Does a short shop test prove that the promotion is worth repeating?
Record what the permitted observation examined, what it omitted and which decision it can inform. Costs, wider outcomes and other changed conditions may remain unestablished. A limited record or peer suggestion is not a lasting uplift or commercial guarantee.
