Singapore group rides with a PAB: check every path type
Match the confirmed device class to each actual riding segment. Host bicycle acceptance cannot resolve a footpath or pedestrian-only link in the proposed route.

Start with these checks
- Actual device class established through the responsible official route
- Complete dated organiser route with necessary approach, return and connecting segments
- Path type established for each proposed riding segment
The problem
A Singapore group ride accepts your proposed bicycle, but you are bringing a power-assisted bicycle and the complete riding line may include path types with different official permissions.
Check the device row before accepting the whole route
Use the device’s established class and the actual path type for every necessary riding segment. LTA’s linked current device matrix marks PAB riding as disallowed on footpaths and Pedestrian-Only Paths, and shows cycling and shared paths as permitted categories. Its ordinary-bicycle row differs on footpaths but also excludes Pedestrian-Only Paths. Those distinctions can defeat a proposed continuous riding line even when the host accepts your bicycle. A permitted category does not approve a particular device, rider or outing: the separate official requirements and actual route conditions still apply. Keep the chosen ride provisional when an essential segment has no applicable answer.
Establish which device is actually being considered
Record the proposed device, its established official class and the source answering that classification. A description such as electric bike in an invitation leaves that question open. LTA’s rules page separately lists PAB device and user requirements; use the responsible official route for an unclear classification or requirement rather than assessing compliance from a photograph. Keep the host’s equipment acceptance in another entry. In a fictional reply, a host says that your bicycle is welcome but gives no classification information. That reply answers only the host’s acceptance. Do not fill the official device row from it, or assume that switching assistance off changes the applicable category.
Give every connecting segment its own path entry
Ask the actual organiser to mark the complete route for the selected date, including the approach, finish and any return line you intend to ride. For each necessary segment, record its location or marked line; path type; applicable information source; device row; and remaining question. LTA’s matrix distinguishes footpaths, Pedestrian-Only Paths, cycling paths and shared paths. Its illustrations and descriptions help frame the enquiry, but a colour, broad connector name or nearby cycling logo cannot establish an omitted link’s category. Copy confirmed information and leave a disputed or unspecified segment unclassified. A long suitable main section cannot supply the answer for a short necessary connection.
Trace a wholly fictional four-segment proposal
This route, host reply and device record are invented. The exercise stipulates an established PAB class and four confirmed path categories: A is a shared path; B is a footpath; C is a cycling path; D is a Pedestrian-Only Path. Using the PAB row, A and C pass only this path-category comparison; B and D fail it. The completed decision is to reject the proposed continuous riding line, while leaving all other requirements separate. More distance on A would not repair B. Changing the example to an ordinary bicycle would change the footpath result for B, but D would still fail. Therefore neither host acceptance nor choosing the most permissive row produces a complete riding plan. No real Singapore route, compliant device or personally suitable ride is established by this exercise.
Make a revision resolve the failed link
For that fictional proposal, ask the host for a different complete line and its actual path categories, or investigate another ride whose stated route answers the requirement. A detour is still a proposal until its connections and the organiser’s arrangement are established. Do not substitute an unverified road section to repair the footpath row or assume permission to push through an unresolved segment. If you consider a different bicycle, establish its own applicable conditions and host acceptance; the example shows why changing devices may leave another failed link. Keep the revised meeting, finish and return with the new line. Confirm the required skills, pace, regrouping, support and agreed departure separately; classifying path types does not settle those arrangements.
Ask the question that names the unresolved segment
You could ask: “For [dated ride], I would bring [device and established class]. Please mark the complete riding line through [unresolved connection] and identify the path type there. The current LTA matrix treats that type differently for my device. What revised route is actually proposed?” Keep the host’s route reply beside the applicable official guidance. Refer an unresolved official classification or rule question to LTA rather than asking the host to grant an exemption. If the organiser changes a connection, check the affected path entries again. An unchanged start, ticket or group name does not preserve the earlier route answer.
Search for a ride with a usable complete line
Use Boardzip’s free cycling search for current social rides or an expressly taught introduction, according to your purpose. Check the actual organiser, prerequisites, bicycle acceptance, complete route, group arrangements and attendance confirmation. Then apply the device-and-path comparison to that candidate’s own segments. Search does not classify a device, approve a route or supply an exception. If no suitable listing answers the essential connection, keep the gap explicit and retain the bounded organiser or LTA enquiry. Compare another confirmed option when available rather than treating a topic match as permission to ride. Search access is free; event admission, instruction and any rental have separate terms.
Questions and answers
Does the host accepting my PAB establish permission for every path?
Keep host equipment acceptance separate from the official device-and-path comparison. Obtain the complete actual riding line and the category of each necessary connection. A positive reply about the bicycle does not classify an omitted footpath or establish a complete permitted route.
Can I use the ordinary-bicycle row if I turn assistance off?
Do not assume that an operating choice changes the device’s official class. Establish the applicable classification through the responsible official route. The worksheet requires that answer before selecting a row; it supplies no exemption or reclassification procedure.
Does a cycling-path tick settle whether this outing works for me?
It answers only the matrix’s path-category comparison for an established device class. Device and user requirements, actual route conditions, the host’s arrangements and your own practical needs remain separate. No tick here certifies a bicycle’s condition, personal ability or safety.
What if one small link is still unclassified?
Keep the complete riding plan provisional if it depends on that link. Name the location and missing category in the organiser enquiry, then resolve any official-rule question through LTA. A known main segment or a longer total distance cannot fill the missing connection.
