The problem

You are pricing a family outing and expect a young child to travel free, but the child’s height, school status, card expiry or chosen bus service may change that plan.

Check the journey before putting zero in the travel budget

A child’s event ticket category does not determine their public-transport fare. Before budgeting for the trip, check four details: height, age, whether the child attends primary school, and any travel card’s expiry. SimplyGo says children below 0.9 m accompanied by a fare-paying commuter travel free automatically. Its Child Concession Card application route is for children at least 0.9 m tall, below seven and not studying in primary school. Apply all those card criteria together. If the child already has a card, check that actual card for the date of your journey rather than starting another application.

Read the card expiry even when the child is still six

SimplyGo gives the Child Concession Card a fixed expiry: 30 April in the year the child turns seven, regardless of birthday month. Here is an invented calendar example using that published rule. A child turns seven in December of the trip year and the family plans to travel in May of that same year. The stated expiry is 30 April of that year, so the card cannot be assumed valid for the May trip merely because the child is still six. This is an explanation of the rule, not a real child’s card check. Check the card’s expiry at a SimplyGo Ticket Office, SimplyGo Kiosk or Assisted Service Kiosk, then establish the applicable next card or fare arrangement.

Prepare a needed card before the outing day

For an eligible child who needs a new card, SimplyGo lists free application at its Ticket Offices and says a newly issued card needs no activation. Its required original identity documents depend on the child’s citizenship or residency; a representative applying for the child also needs their own original NRIC or passport. Use the current official document list before making that separate trip. A venue registration form is not the card application route, and there is no reason to send a child’s identity documents to an event organiser to settle a transport concession. If the child will not attend primary school that year, SimplyGo says to call its hotline, 6883 5048, at least three months before expiry for assistance. A Non-MOE School Smart Card is issued only if eligible.

Check the bus service category, not just the destination

SimplyGo’s free-travel card description excludes Express, Premium Bus and City Direct services. For those services it says the card needs a top-up and adult cash fare applies. Do not carry a zero-fare assumption onto one of those services because the same child uses the card elsewhere. Write the actual service beside your travel estimate, and use the applicable fare information for that service rather than inventing a flat family amount. Compare another workable journey if that changes the cost or preparation. A lower travel cost is useful only when the arrival time and route still fit the session.

Complete one row per child, then price the event separately

Use this short travel note for each child: intended trip date; height/age/school check; card held and expiry; service category; applicable fare or unanswered item. Mark an unresolved fare clearly rather than treating it as free. In a second invented example, two siblings have different travel arrangements, while both need places in the same workshop. Completing one sibling’s travel row does not fill the other’s row or give either child event admission. Once the travel figures are resolved, add the chosen journey to the complete family outing bill. Keep venue admission, adult tickets, materials and booking fees in their own basket.

Choose the session from the whole plan

Search Boardzip for the family activity you want, then compare the actual listing’s time and location with the journey you can use. Save the relevant official fare/card answer with your preparation note, without keeping identity-document images in a shared event-planning message. Before travelling, check current transport information and the organiser’s latest session instructions. If the card or fare arrangement is unresolved, retain a realistic travel cost question rather than claiming a free outing. The concession check makes the journey budget usable; the event’s actual admission and supervision arrangements still need to fit your family.

Questions and answers

Does a child’s free event ticket mean free bus or train travel?

Check the transport rules independently. The event’s age category does not establish the child’s fare or card eligibility.

Can the Child Concession Card expire before the seventh birthday?

Yes. SimplyGo states 30 April of the year the child turns seven, regardless of birthday month. Check the actual card for the trip date.

Is being under seven enough to apply for this card?

The stated application criteria also require height of at least 0.9 m and that the child is not studying in primary school. Use all the criteria together.

Should I put zero travel cost into the family bill immediately?

Finish each child’s travel check, including card expiry and service category, first. Keep an unresolved amount visible, then add the actual journey to the separate event basket.
