Start with these checks
- Specific vacancy duties available
- A representative able to answer for that named role
- Decision and reporting scope stated or an official clarification route
The problem
You have substantial Singapore work experience, but fair vacancies use titles that do not reveal whether the role owns decisions, manages people or mainly supports another team.
Define the responsibility you want to carry
Before counting senior vacancies, write a responsibility statement: the work you want to perform, the decision you want to own and the responsibility you prefer to leave with another role. An experienced worker may want to analyse an issue without managing staff, or coordinate delivery while retaining approval for changes. Put an actual example beside the statement and identify your personal part. Reviewing a colleague’s work and completing that work yourself are different evidence. A previous title can introduce your background while leaving these distinctions unanswered. Shortlist roles by the work you want to perform, then compare each vacancy’s actual decisions and approval limits with the responsibility you intend to carry. This comparison neither assigns your employment level nor assumes every less senior title is a poor fit.
Build a responsibility card from the named vacancy
Give each possible role its own card with seven entries: named vacancy; ordinary duty; decision made directly; approval needed; who relies on the result; reporting or review arrangement; and the source of each answer. Mark blank entries as unknown rather than filling them from your previous employer. e2i’s retained career-fair information directs visitors to the individual event’s roles and possible job-listing booklets. It supplies a route for researching duties, not a confirmed vacancy or invitation here. Copy a relevant duty accurately and identify the point it does not explain. “Coordinate orders” may mean collecting updates, choosing their sequence or deciding exceptions. Find which responsibility the description establishes before interpreting its title as equivalent to your former role.

Ask about one ordinary decision and one exception
A focused question makes the missing boundary easier to explain: “When the ordinary work changes, what can this role decide, and what must go to another person?” Ask for a general description suitable for the conversation. Do not request customer files, private operating procedures or an employer’s live systems. Record whether the person is describing this vacancy, their own team or a possible arrangement elsewhere. A working practitioner can explain what they do while lacking authority to confirm the employer’s recruitment terms. If the answer concerns a different role, keep it as perspective and return the target vacancy’s row to unknown. Separate the reporting line from approval authority: naming a manager does not explain which decisions the worker may make.
Compare two invented employers without inventing the missing scope
These employers, roles and replies are wholly fictional. Role A uses a senior coordinator title. Its description says the worker compiles a daily work list, but initially leaves allocation authority unstated. Role B uses a planning specialist title and says the worker investigates late tasks; who approves changes remains unstated. An experienced worker has personally compiled work lists and discussed delays, while their former supervisor approved allocations. That is evidence for the stated compiling task, not proof of independent allocation authority or B’s investigation method. A fictional representative later confirms A’s supervisor still approves allocation changes. A’s authority row can now be filled with that limited answer. B still needs its investigation and approval question. The clearer card can justify approaching A without establishing pay, seniority equivalence, suitability in every respect or a job offer.
Turn an overqualified label into an answerable concern
If a recruiter says the role may be too junior for you, ask which actual point they mean: the duties you want, management expectations, work arrangement, pay expectations or another stated concern. These are possible questions, not a diagnosis of their motive. Respond only to the concern they identify. An unsent example is: “I am interested in personally compiling the work list and understand that allocation approval belongs to the supervisor. My recent experience includes that compiling task. Is your concern the responsibility I intend to take, or another condition of this vacancy?” Adapt every statement to what is true. Do not hide management history, pretend to accept unknown terms or promise a length of service simply to end the conversation. If no specific concern is given, the employer’s reason remains unclear.
Keep intended responsibility separate from unconfirmed arrangements
A preference for hands-on work can clarify direction without settling the role’s schedule, pay, development or formal conditions. Record those as separate questions through the actual recruitment process. Use the shift-pattern companion for coverage, training and travel constraints; use the manager-to-individual-contributor guide when the main gap is demonstrating recent specialist work. In the invented example, A’s allocation answer leaves its working pattern and other employment terms unknown. A useful conversation is not a reason to fill those fields with your preferred arrangement. Avoid turning “we can discuss that” into an agreed exception. Save the answer under the employer that gave it
After the event, add the respondent’s role, the vacancy they addressed, the particular answer and any route actually offered for the remaining enquiry. Compare cards on the same responsibility question before choosing what to do next. Do not transfer A’s supervisor approval arrangement into B because their titles sound similar. A contact exchange, invitation to apply and actual offer should also have different entries. If an answer conflicts with published duties, quote the specific disagreement to the responsible recruitment contact and keep it unresolved until clarified. The mid-career title-versus-task guide develops conflicting practitioner accounts; the offer-deadline guide handles an actual offer against another pending process. Neither disagreement is settled by ranking the most confident event speaker.
Choose a bounded next step from the completed card
Finish with three possibilities: proceed through the stated application route because the responsibility question is sufficiently clear; obtain one missing answer that determines your interest; or leave the role outside the work you intend to pursue. For fictional A, confirming supervisor approval resolves that single boundary while hours remain an enquiry. For B, the investigation duty remains too vague to claim an equivalent specialist role. A rejection or unanswered reply does not establish the recruiter’s motive, and you need not rewrite your work history around it. Use Boardzip’s free career-event search for further candidates or a relevant discussion. Search access is free; participation and employer processes have their own conditions. A precise scope answer can be useful even when you decide against applying.
Questions and answers
Does a senior-sounding title mean I will own the decisions?
Locate the ordinary duty, direct decision, approval route and reporting arrangement. A title does not fill those rows. In the invented comparison, A’s supervisor retains allocation approval despite the senior coordinator label.
What should I say when a recruiter calls me overqualified?
Ask which actual concern they mean, then answer with your truthful intended work, relevant contribution and preferences. Keep an unexplained concern unresolved. Do not guess their motive, conceal responsibilities or claim acceptance of terms you have not established.
Can I use the same answer for both employers?
You can state your own evidence consistently, but each vacancy needs its own scope record. One employer’s approval boundary or working arrangement says nothing about the other. Keep the respondent and named role beside every answer.
Do I need to remove management experience to seek hands-on work?
Describe it accurately while distinguishing the tasks you performed from work you reviewed or delegated. Use the manager-to-individual-contributor companion for recent specialist evidence. A direction preference does not require a false employment history.
What if the representative cannot explain decision authority?
Record the unanswered decision and any official clarification route they actually provide. A role can remain worth investigating without being sufficiently understood for your application choice. A general account from another team is not a substitute for the target vacancy’s answer.
Does permission to apply confirm all the employment conditions?
It establishes an application step, not agreed hours, pay or an offer. Keep each outstanding condition separate and use the responsible recruitment process. A helpful event conversation does not supply the formal terms on your behalf.
