Singapore data workshops: identify a coordinate-system mismatch before plotting
Prepare a small map example that distinguishes the source coordinate system, parameter names and output format before blaming the chart.

Start with these checks
- A hands-on mapping or data session that can inspect coordinate metadata
- Support for checking one known location before plotting the full table
- Participants able to discuss source and destination formats rather than visual styling alone
The problem
A Singapore spreadsheet analyst imports location values into a map and sees points in the wrong place, but cannot tell whether the values use latitude and longitude or a different coordinate system.
Recover the names and meaning of the values
Keep the source field names, metadata and an unmodified example beside the spreadsheet. Two numeric columns do not identify their coordinate system by themselves. Note which system the map expects and whether it requests separate named parameters or an ordered pair. Do not rename unfamiliar values to latitude and longitude just to satisfy an import screen.
Check whether conversion is actually needed
OneMap documents conversions among WGS84, SVY21 and EPSG3857. These are separate formats, not alternative labels for the same two numbers. Use the relevant source documentation to identify the input and output before selecting a conversion. If the source system is unknown, establish it first; a plausible point on a map is not sufficient evidence of the right interpretation.

Bring one independently identifiable location
Choose a public location whose expected position you can check without sharing personal addresses. Preserve its original values and show the proposed conversion or parameter mapping separately. Compare the result with the intended location before processing the remaining rows. This small example helps peers distinguish incompatible systems from swapped fields, formatting changes or a mistake in the plotting tool.
Document the transformation for the next reader
Record the source format, destination format, field mapping and the observation used to check the example. Keep original values alongside transformed values so the step remains inspectable. At a workshop, ask participants to challenge that interpretation before refining the map's appearance. Use the current API documentation for any implementation requirements rather than assuming an unauthenticated sample will run.
Questions and answers
Can I fix the map by swapping the two columns?
Only if you have established that order is the problem and that the values are already in the required system. Swapping does not convert one coordinate system into another. Check the source metadata and a known public location before applying a change to every row.
Do I need an API token just to discuss the problem?
You can prepare the metadata and a safe example without issuing a request. OneMap's current documentation lists authentication requirements for its converters. If you later use an API, follow those requirements rather than sharing a token in the workshop.
