Singapore consultant peer sessions: discussing repeated change requests
Prepare an invented change record that separates the original output, added work, input dependency and decision still needed before treating a request as an agreed plan.

Start with these checks
- Participant case discussion with time for a bounded delivery question
- Permitted material and actual viewing or recording arrangements
- Relevant experience of the input and review dependency
The problem
You deliver projects independently in Singapore and keep receiving extra requests after work has started. The referral mixer you are considering has no case-review segment, so you need another setting to examine where you and the client understood the project boundary differently.
Describe the changed work before describing the client
Name the original output, the new request and the decision you need to make. A complaint that the client keeps changing things does not show peers which work changed or what remains unagreed. Start with a wholly invented example if you can examine the operating question without the client’s material. Keep the actual agreement, private messages and identifying details outside a casual exchange unless their particular use is permitted. Choose an actual case-discussion format and permitted example. Compare the original delivery plan with the requested addition, then identify the unanswered question before treating the addition as part of the plan. Describe observations separately from your interpretation of someone’s intention.
Make an original-and-requested-work record
Use six entries: original agreed output; requested addition; input or preparation that changes; effect on the work or timing; person who decides the arrangement; and current answer or unresolved question. Keep the basis beside each entry. An estimate you made is different from a duration someone promised, and a request is different from acceptance of your proposed response. Mark the added input unknown when you have not seen it. A second audience or department can introduce work beyond copying the first output, but do not assign that work without examining the particular task. Use the record to describe the question peers can discuss. Actual contractual, pricing or change-control decisions need their own applicable process.
Choose working time for the actual question
Ask the organiser whether the session allows participant cases, how discussion time is allocated and what material can be viewed or retained. A referral mixer may provide useful introductions without a delivery-review segment. SME Centre @SMCCI’s provider description checked on 8 October 2026 identifies advisory, group projects and capability workshops separately. That limited local context supports distinguishing formats; it does not confirm a consultant clinic, your admission or individual feedback on this case. Give the host the kind of question rather than sending an entire private project record unsolicited. If the format cannot examine a bounded case, retain it for an appropriate confirmed opportunity. A relevant business title and a helpful speaker do not by themselves reserve a review turn.

Work through a wholly fictional two-department request
Everything in this case, including the work estimates and replies, is invented. A consultant’s original planning record describes one process map for Department A and one review round: four hours of mapping plus three hours of review, seven hours in total. They have ten hours available for the example’s stated work period. A new request asks for Department B as well. For this comparison only, the consultant assumes two additional hours to gather B’s inputs and three to map them, adding five. Seven plus five is twelve, which exceeds the ten available by two. These fictional estimates are not a productivity norm, a quotation or evidence that the real task takes that long. The record exposes an unanswered choice about the output, inputs or delivery arrangement; it does not establish which choice the client will accept.
Ask peers to examine the assumption, not approve the change
Give peers one question: what would you need to establish before treating Department B as part of this plan? A useful response might identify whether B supplies the required information, whether another review is needed or whether a different output is intended. Keep the suggestion and the assumption behind it in separate lines. In the invented case, a peer proposes including only the first department now and discussing B separately. That is an option for the appropriate conversation, not the client’s decision. Another peer may have completed a similar-looking task with prepared inputs; their timing does not fill your missing input. Compare the actual delivery conditions across the two tasks. Use this case record to identify the specific difference rather than copying a peer’s rate or promised turnaround.
Read a partial reply at the question it answers
For the invented case, suppose the client replies, “Department B can send its information on Friday.” This identifies an input-availability statement in the example. It does not answer whether the second map belongs in the present output, whether the original review changes or which delivery arrangement is accepted. Keep those entries open. A bounded next enquiry could be, “My current plan is the one Department A map and its review. Including B adds the stated input and mapping work. Should we keep A for this stage and discuss B separately, or agree a revised output and delivery plan?” Adapt the wording to the actual task and your role. Sending that question is not approval, and the planning record cannot determine what an actual agreement requires.
Keep the decision beside the version it covers
Continue the fictional exchange explicitly: the client later answers, “Keep the Department A map and its one review for this stage; discuss B separately.” Within this invented sequence, that answer resolves the immediate output choice. It does not commission the later B task, establish its fee or promise that every remaining input and review dependency is ready. Retain the specific answer with the original-stage record and leave the separate request unresolved. If the reply instead proposes another output, record that proposal and identify what still needs agreement rather than silently editing the plan to match your preferred reading. A peer’s encouragement and a client’s acknowledgement can be useful observations while resolving different questions. Do not report an agreed revised plan from a response that only says the enquiry was received.
Take one clearer question into the next conversation
After the permitted discussion, keep four lines: ambiguity identified; peer suggestion and its assumption; question taken to the responsible conversation; and answer actually obtained. In the invented sequence, the useful result is a clear choice to retain A for this stage, with B still separate. That is narrower than proving the consultant will avoid disputes, improve revenue or deliver every future project successfully. Keep any real agreement interpretation or remedy in the appropriate professional context with its complete material; this guide offers an operating discussion method. Use Boardzip’s free networking search to find relevant peer candidates after naming the case question. Search access is free; participant working time, sharing permission and any later client arrangement require their own confirmation. If no suitable format is verified, keep the question rather than treating a general mixer as a delivery clinic.
Questions and answers
Should I show peers my signed client contract?
Share only what you have permission to disclose. An invented example is usually enough to discuss an operating problem, while interpretation of a real contract needs suitable professional advice.
Is a business referral group a delivery clinic?
Not necessarily. Read the stated purpose, format, fees and membership conditions. A group can be useful for introductions without offering detailed project feedback.
What does the invented twelve-hour comparison establish?
The explicitly fictional assumptions give seven original hours plus five added hours, exceeding ten available by two. It exposes a planning question in that example. It does not estimate your project, set a rate or prove which arrangement the client will accept.
Does a reply about input arrival approve the added output?
Keep the answer beside its question. In the fictional exchange, information arriving Friday does not settle whether the second map is included or how the review and delivery plan change. Ask the missing decision explicitly.
Can a peer decide whether I should accept the request?
A permitted peer discussion can identify assumptions and options. Keep the actual project decision with its responsible process. A suggestion, a submitted question and the client’s specific answer are different parts of the record.
What should I keep after the conversation?
Retain the version, the decision it covers and what remains unresolved. In the invented later reply, A stays in this stage and B is left for a separate discussion; that does not establish a new commission, fee or wider business outcome.
