The problem

Vendor talks promise simplicity while your team has existing services, limited budget and operational requirements.

Start with one service decision and its constraint

Name the existing service, the user task it supports and the decision your team needs to make. Then describe the constraint that could change the choice: a dependency, available skills, allowable disruption or a limited spending envelope. A new-service demonstration can be useful background while leaving that constraint untouched. Use a six-field decision note: service task; workload; dependency; constraint; two approaches you can actually consider; question still unanswered. Use an authorised simplified account or an invented service for public discussion. You are selecting a learning activity, not asking a speaker to approve your whole architecture. Compare what the agenda lets participants examine with the one question in the note before choosing a tool or vendor.

Compare costs for the same work and period

Write the workload assumptions beside a savings claim: task performed, amount of work, period and service conditions. Ask which charges and operating effort the comparison includes, such as the resources used, data movement, required support or work left with your team; do not assume every provider charges for the same categories. In this invented comparison, an old example handles 100 practice jobs in a period while a new example handles 40. A lower total in the second case does not establish a saving for the same workload. Another comparison might hold the jobs constant while leaving support or transition effort outside its scope. Keep those exclusions visible. Bring the comparison question to a cost workshop instead of treating its headline percentage as a forecast for your service. Use actual applicable terms for any eventual purchase.

Put provider tasks and remaining team duties on separate rows

For each proposed approach, make a task map: recurring task; who is said to perform it; actual scope confirmed; access or input needed; team duty remaining; unanswered handover. Ask about the tasks your service depends on rather than requesting a universal definition of managed. A demonstration can show a supplied service working without explaining who changes its configuration, examines a failed request or coordinates a response. Identify the person or provider route able to confirm that scope; the session facilitator may only explain an example. Keep unresolved ownership explicit. For the specific question of who receives an alert, what they inspect and which next action is authorised, use the existing cloud alert guide. A product label does not fill that response process.

Test the trade-off against the team you actually have

Place the task map beside available team capability and time. For each remaining duty, record a person or agreed service that can fulfil it, preparation still needed and the decision owner. In a fictional two-person team, Approach A removes one routine task but introduces configuration work that neither person has yet practised. Approach B keeps the familiar task while leaving an unresolved migration dependency. Neither is automatically the right choice from a feature count. Ask which gap can be addressed through permitted practice, an applicable provider arrangement or another option. Someone being available is different from them having the required permission or knowledge. Keep the actual deployment decision with the responsible team; a helpful peer conversation does not supply a new operator or approved staffing arrangement.

Prepare a sequence that exposes the unanswered decision

Use a wholly fictional or properly permitted example with five entries: intended task; earlier state; change; observed symptom; decision needing evidence. An invented service accepts a practice job after a configuration change, but its expected status does not appear. Record that observation separately from a guess about the cause. Do not copy private logs, account identifiers, credentials or customer records into a public discussion to make the example realistic. If you replace material, say which relationship the example preserves and which details are invented. Check whether participant cases and screen sharing are permitted. The rollback guide develops the trigger and restoration limit, while the alert guide develops the responder’s next question. Use those answers when that is the gap rather than expanding this note into an incident procedure.

Confirm the exercise access and spending arrangement

Ask what participants personally run, which environment the host supplies and what setup must be complete beforehand. Establish whose account is used, the permissions required, the actual usage charges or credits, any stated limits and who answers a failed preparation step. Free event admission does not settle resource use. For the end of the exercise, ask what must be returned or cleaned up, which instructions apply and whether any access continues afterwards. Follow the actual permitted training arrangement; do not infer permission to alter an employer service from registration. A demonstration, a supplied lab and practice in your own authorised environment can have different conditions. If a required account or instruction is missing, keep it unresolved instead of guessing credentials or making another purchase to rescue the plan.

Keep a repeated exercise separate from production readiness

OGP’s FormSG deployment guidance distinguishes evaluation from production and asks teams to consider timeline, scale, infrastructure and technical capability. That scoped example supports examining your own requirements; it supplies no approved architecture for another service. After a lab, record the task you performed, the environment and components supplied, what you were able to repeat and what remained untested. A classroom result can depend on a prepared account or dependency that your next practice setup does not have. Ask the host about the permitted repeat route and its missing conditions. If your aim is to publish deployment instructions for a project, use the existing tested-environment documentation guide for its reader-check and contribution decision. A successful repeat still leaves production permissions, operational review and the service’s own requirements to be established.

Choose the activity that answers the decision note

Compare three formats against your note: a demonstration explaining an approach; a lab letting you carry out a stated task; and a permitted working discussion examining the constraint. These are comparison formats, not promises about any current Singapore programme. An enquiry could say, “Our shareable example has [dependency] and [constraint]. Will this session examine [the comparable-cost assumption or remaining operating duty], what will participants do, and which preparation is required?” Keep the actual reply beside the named session. SGInnovate’s calendar is a technical-event discovery route, not confirmation of that exercise or a place. Use Boardzip’s free cloud-event search after naming the gap. Search is free; admission, accounts and participation need their own checks. After attending, retain the evidence examined, the limit still open and the next permitted question. If no verified session fits, preserve the note without claiming a current architecture clinic.

Questions and answers

Is a sponsored cloud session useless?

Compare its stated activity with your decision note. A vendor demonstration may explain an approach without examining your dependency, workload or remaining duty. Sponsorship does not settle either usefulness or production suitability.

Can I use a headline saving in my own budget?

Identify the compared workload, period, included charges and excluded effort. Keep your service’s actual assumptions and applicable terms separate. A percentage from an event example does not establish its cost for your team.

Does a managed service remove our operating responsibilities?

Ask which specific tasks the provider performs and which remain with your team under the actual arrangement. Record access, input and response ownership separately. The label does not complete the task map.

Should I bring a real incident to the discussion?

Use an appropriately permitted or wholly fictional sequence and identify its limits. Keep credentials, private operational records and customer material outside public troubleshooting. Confirm that the session supports the example you want to discuss.

Does free admission include the lab’s resource use?

Confirm the account, permissions, charges or credits, limits and end-of-exercise instructions for that session. Admission and environment access are separate conditions; keep an essential unanswered account question visible.

Does repeating the deployment prove the service is ready to operate?

Record the task and environment actually repeated, including supplied dependencies and untested conditions. OGP’s evaluation-versus-production distinction is a scoped example. Your service still needs its own requirements, responsibilities and approved review.
