Singapore bird walks: personalise a shared eBird checklist without changing other copies
Check acceptance before personal species edits, and ask the original creator to correct shared date, location or effort information. A local edit does not establish a group-wide correction.

The problem
After a Singapore group bird walk, your shared eBird checklist contains observations you did not personally make, and you are unsure which changes affect only your copy or still need the original keeper.
Decide whether the change concerns your observations or the group record
When a bird-walk group uses eBird sharing, a shared list is not a permanently synchronised document. eBird’s official Help article describes independent copies in participants’ accounts, with an important acceptance-timing exception. First identify your task: making your personal species list reflect your observations, or correcting information that applies to the shared outing. Those tasks can require different people and steps. Ask who kept the original list and which actual checklist belongs to this outing. Check the actual walk’s beginner explanations and how missed views are handled separately from the record used after a group chooses eBird sharing.

Keep the group list and personal observations distinguishable
eBird permits one list to be kept for people birding together and shared with those participants. A group list can therefore include a species that another participant observed while you did not. Keep a note of your own observations rather than treating receipt of the list as evidence that you personally made every observation. Do not invent a species name to resolve a mismatch. Keep an uncertain identification unresolved and ask about the features needed to establish it. This shared-list process is not a universal survey method: a project using another form or protocol needs its own instructions. NSS identifies its Bird Group as Singapore’s eBird country partner and a reviewer of rare or unusual submissions; that does not make every walk a research assignment.
Check acceptance before personalising the list
Before changing a group list to represent only your own species observations, follow eBird’s instruction to ensure at least one other eBirder has accepted the shared checklist. Its Help article says changes made before at least one other person accepts apply to all lists. A sharing invitation sent is therefore not the same evidence as another participant’s accepted copy. Record who can establish that state and ask the keeper if it is unclear. Once the relevant acceptance is established, personal species changes do not automatically update other shared versions. Make the intended change through the actual documented process; this guide has not inspected or edited a live account.

Test an invented missed-observation case
These people and species labels are fictional. Noor keeps a group list containing species P and Q. Noor personally observed P, while another participant, Halim, observed Q. Noor sends the list to Halim and wants the personal version to contain only P. Removing Q before another eBirder accepts would apply that change to all versions under the documented timing exception. Noor instead establishes that Halim has accepted, then makes the personal change according to the instructions. Halim’s accepted version is independent of that later personal edit. This example does not identify any real bird or show how eBird aggregates species for research. It illustrates why an invitation and an accepted copy matter before personalisation.
Send original date, location and effort corrections through the creator
For an error in date, location or effort information, eBird says the checklist creator must correct the original and re-share it. Editing those details in a recipient’s copy changes the personal account while the master record retains the creator’s information. Use a correction note: affected checklist; field; original value; evidence for the correction; creator contacted; original corrected; and re-share still pending or completed. In a separate fictional case, the original records 90 minutes where the established outing effort is 60. A recipient changes their own copy to 60, but that alone leaves the creator’s original at 90. The remaining task is the creator’s original correction and re-sharing, not declaring every record fixed.

Read a re-shared correction before choosing its outcome
The official instructions let a recipient Replace the earlier shared version with a re-shared correction or Keep the original and decline the new version. Compare the offered correction with the actual problem and your personal record before making that choice. Do not assume a message that the keeper corrected something means every participant has incorporated it. Keep the creator’s action and each recipient’s decision at their actual status. This page does not promise that replacing preserves every personal edit or media item; consult the complete current Help instructions for the case you encounter. If an interface step fails, retain the unresolved outcome and use official support rather than treating another click or a local edit as proof of group-wide correction.

Choose a bird session that supports the remaining question
Use Boardzip’s free bird search for current beginner walks or bird-recording discussions, then ask whether the session teaches identification, uses a shared checklist or offers help with the recording task you need. Bring an invented two-species example to a suitable discussion rather than circulating participants’ usernames, email addresses or private records. A walk can offer observation learning without any eBird instruction or submission role. If no suitable session is established, keep the specific copy or correction question for eBird’s official Help route or the actual list keeper. Search does not share a checklist, confirm a place or certify a wildlife record; each of those requires its own actual process.
Questions and answers
Is an eBird shared checklist a live document that always updates for everyone?
The official Help describes independent account copies and an acceptance-timing exception. Before personalising, establish at least one other eBirder has accepted; earlier changes apply to all lists. Later personal species edits do not automatically change other versions.
Does receiving a group list prove I personally observed every species?
No. Keep your actual observations distinguishable from the group’s and follow the documented personalisation timing. Do not invent an identification or treat this platform process as another project’s survey method.
Does changing the date or duration in my recipient copy fix the original?
eBird says recipient changes affect the personal account, while master date, location and effort come from the creator. Ask the creator to correct the original and re-share, then record the actual recipient outcome.
Does a keeper’s correction automatically replace every accepted copy?
The re-sharing instructions give recipients Replace or Keep choices. Track the actual re-share and incorporation instead of treating the keeper’s local edit as completed correction for everyone.
Does a bird-walk listing include eBird instruction?
Check the programme’s actual teaching and recording tasks. Identification learning, shared-list participation and formal survey work are different arrangements. Ask about the specific help you need before relying on the session.
